The car engine thing is bullshite. Mechanics get paid sometimes six figures because it is a specialized field. No non-mechanic should ought to know how to fix his own car unless it's something like an oil change or antifreeze refill or inflate tires or swap batteries. If it's a cylinder gone out or spark plug died, especially a transmission problem, no ordinary guy should know how to do that. If my starter goes out and someone hands me a new one, I'd have no idea how to dissassemble my car and replace.

I imagine cars in 1933 were much more simple than today.

Before computers many car repairs were considered DIY-able

There are likely several videos to instruct you on YouTube. No such service existed in 1933.
I do get your point though. In my opinion a man should own a decent set of tools and have a willingness to attempt a diagnosis and repair if needed
