Too far out and you give Trump's team time to lower the boom via opposition research.

All they're interested in is someone who gives them a theoretical chance at closing the gap between where Trump is currently sitting and Biden's abysmal polling. (Not the fake news polls, mind you. Real internal polling that shows that they're going to get massacred).
