If you're first instinct at 430PM after someone knocks on your door is to get a gun, then i feel sorry for the life you live in where you deem that is necessary.

This statement is indicative of your lack of complex thinking. You are looking at the situation through YOUR lens and assuming we are too.

My situation is significantly different. I live in a gated neighborhood with 24 gate guards and 24 hour roving security. I have cameras that make it impossible for sneaky cop (or your stealthy FedEx guy) to hide from me. I also have obscured glass windows and sidelights in my door which would leave someone backlit in the daytime. Bottom line I could see him and he couldn't see me. My situational information is significantly higher in my home than he was in the apartment limited to nothing but a peephole.

That banging knock with a lack of announcement is clearly done by someone with serious intentions. That isn't a UPS knock or his buddy from round the way. When someone knocks like that and hides from view (which is 99.9% of the time intentional) if you have a gun, are proficient with it and don't retrieve it then why the hell do you even own a gun. Even at 4:30 in the afternoon. While criminals may prefer the night sometimes they need a fix at 4:30 and just can't wait until dark.

I get that the actions of the airman may not have been ideal when you have full awareness of what was going on outside the door but the calculus is different when this is your view of the situation:

I agree the cops knocks were obnoxious, but that's also engrained by their job. They are used to having to knock loud.

But in that situation, I can't see, I'm not opening the door. I'm yelling out to have them announce themselves. I'm calling the police before I answer the door if I can't see anyone.

Why would you answer the door with a gun not drawn? Let's say it is a perp. Boom you are dead.

and i can understand that completely.
It still doesn't change the fact that he knew it was the cops announcing themselves, and still chose to answer the door that way. Still shouldnt' be a death sentence, but it's extremely dumb.
