Why not? What law in the state of Florida makes holding a gun in your own home while not committing a crime illegal?

Looked like the hood. I'd bet most people are wary of opening the door and nothing prevents people with bad intentions from shouting "Sheriff!".

Can see why the guy had his gun as the cop stood to the side so he couldn't be seen through the peep hole.

Poor slob had his gun to protect himself opening the door to whoever was
out there and never threatened the cop with it at all. Gets blown away anyway.

frick that cop. Thinks he's Quick Draw McGraw or something.

Some people need to spend time behind bars for this mistake.

But you should be able to.

It’s stupid what he did.
Why is that so hard to comprehend?

Who the frick answers their door in the middle of the day with a gun in hand after cops have banged on your door and announced themselves? This didn’t happen at 3 am.

I'm not saying that he shouldn't be able to exercise his 2A right in his home. It's an absolute tragedy what happened, and he clearly didn't deserve to be gunned down. I'm simply saying that answering the door for a cop with a gun in your hand is something that no one should do. It absolutely can get you killed. Its possible that he didn't realize that it was a cop, even though it seems like he would've heard the cop ID himself and it seems like the guy would have looked through the peephole again before he opened the door and saw that he was a cop. Idk. At the end of the day there were A LOT of mistakes made by multiple people. And it got someone killed. shite sucks.

anyone can yell sheriffs office and bang on your door. i cant assume he saw the cop through the peephole, because the cop was hiding from sight half the time. I'd rather suspicious myself if someone started banging on my door, but were also hiding from my peephole and only later adding they are from the sheriffs office.

the cop waited and listened before knocking. the video seemed quiet to me...but perhaps the cop could hear more than picked up on bodycam. this is a factor that may could sway me from leaning there should be some real accountability to be had here.

In the range of stupid, he's certainly not the biggest offender in the story.

Not even comply or die, while being 100% legal in your own residence, just die. Not a great side to even remotely support.

If the he in this sentence is the cop I agree.

Whether SOP or not what the cop did is set up a situation that was sketchy as hell for the person inside the apartment. Banging without announcing and then disappearing out of view creates a situation where if a person has hairs on their neck they should be at attention. Within the 4 corners of the video the man did nothing illegal nor anything that could be construed as furtive in my opinion.

If you argue what the man did is stupid you have to see the root of that is a cop problem. When you get shot and not a single thing you did in front of the cop is illegal that is not a citizen problem, or it shouldn't be.

Both claims are demonstrably, provably, bullshite. Cop was told to go to 1401 and he knocked on 1401. Cop did not "bust down the door" but knocked and yelled "Sheriff's department" twice. The suspect voluntarily opened the door.

I agree, but anybody can identify like that. Unlikely, but possible. I think it would be best to find a way to look out the door to verify he's in uniform or something. If you can tell it's police then I think it would be wise to not answer holding a gun. I'm not saying you can't do it. I just don't think it would be ideal.

I agree. This was my concern. It would be helpful for him to have a way to identify if it was a cop before answering.

I agree with the posters saying people should have the right to answer the door like he did. I just wouldn't want to do so if it's a verified cop.

Regardless the cop was way too quick to shoot him like that. I'm not here to fault the airman. I don't want anyone to think that. I just think you will always have some cops quick to react like this, so it might be ideal to verify before answering. Even if you have to talk to the officer through the door and ask him to better identify himself. I think that could be a safer situation for both. Then again someone could argue if it's not a cop maybe it's not good to try and have a verbal convo with them. I don't know, but this sucks and it's horrible.

The sheriff’s office said in a statement last week that a deputy responding to a call of a disturbance in progress at the apartment complex reacted in self-defense after encountering an armed man.

Why does the govt think it’s ok to shoot armed citizens?

Until we make the govt fear us, this tyrannical shite will only get worse.

Put yourself in the cops shoes.

Holding a gun in your own dwelling, especially when you are not pointing it at someone, is not a threat and is not justification for getting killed.

Explain what you wanted the cop to do there? Seriously, put yourself in his shoes. You going to just chance it that he won’t shoot you? He’s a human being, not a robot.

When you have a badge and a gun, the standards are higher. You roam society fully armed with lethal and non-lethal items, as well as body armor. The public has to trust that you are able to tell when there's a threat, and when there isn't a threat. Citizens, especially in their own dwellings, are allowed to carry swords, kitchen knives, bleach, scissors, and guns - all without the presumption of being a threat.

I'm assuming by your logic, and the number of these incidents that happen, that citizens can now decide they are not going to "just chance it" that LE won't shoot them - otherwise you're creating a special class in violation of the 14th Amendment. This means that when you're pulled over for speeding and the LEO approaches your car with gun drawn or hand on the gun in the holster, you no longer have to "just chance it" and you can preemptively begin shooting. After all, the LEO is "just human" and apparently not held to a higher standard than the ordinary citizen. If the ordinary citizen is assumed to be a threat, then the LEO must be looked at in the same way, if we use your logic.

quote:

The only way that guy possibly doesn’t get shot answering the door with a gun is if he immediately says don’t shoot don’t shoot don’t shoot while putting the gun on the ground and walking away from it.

No, the way he doesn't get shot is to have LE that understands they must accept risk, and they must verify hostile intent before going to lethal force.

quote:

You can say something stupid like I wish they didn’t shoot everyone with a gun immediately

That would not be a stupid comment.

quote:

that’s the consequences of being a stupid gun owner

This guy was not a stupid gun owner. He was in his own dwelling. He can answer the door dressed as Captain Kirk or Robo Cop or anything else he wishes to do, including holding a gun. That is his right. And even if he is a stupid gun owner, he's allowed to be a stupid gun owner when he's not posing a threat and he's not allowed to be murdered for stupidity.

quote:

A responsible gun owner doesn’t answer the door like that even if it wasn’t the police.

This is ridiculous. Again, it's his dwelling. And being irresponsible is not grounds for getting killed.

If this guy had been cleaning his weapon, tried to re-assemble it and put it away to comply with your advice, and it took too much time and LE knocked down his door, you'd still find a way to criticize him, rather than LE.

Totally Agree! Same thing could have happened to a white guy and this barely makes news but bring up race and we got ourselves a national headline. Blacks killing blacks , blacks killing whites ,cops killing whites nothing to see here but cops killing black or white killing black JACKPOT! Liberal media at its finest.

You could as easily reverse this logic and apply it to the airman. Both the cop and the airman had the legal right to possess a gun.

The police don’t have the right to walk up to someone who is open carrying and shoot them because they feel unsafe.

Actually that complex is relatively new for FWB. Rent starts at about $1400 for 1BR.
