At the very least, there are far fewer crimes of opportunity. Cell phones and Life360 make it difficult. In the old days, you had a subhuman out driving around and would abduct teen girls/women/kids that were walking, had broken down vehicles, etc. Now, there are much fewer occurrences.

70's made people bolder with all the hitch hiking. Men who got just a little too horny made some mistakes and others turned into bonafide serial killers.
I think in order to be bet away with it youd have to have a job that sends you to larger cities on a semi-regular basis. The key is to not have any outliers in your information when they start searching. You have to appear routine day in and day out with reasons but within that is when you would need to do whatever it is that you do.
