Wasn’t Lee accused of killing the wife of a jailed politician (Marianne Fowler, wife of Jerry) based on cell phone tracking alone?

They had circumstantial evidence but nothing to confirm her death let alone he murdered her IIRC.

Nope, there is still a massive underworld most are unaware of.

The only difference is technology which helps investigators.

Killers from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

I mean…hard to top Manson, Gacy, Kemper, Bundy, Rameriz, Dahlmer.

70's made people bolder with all the hitch hiking. Men who got just a little too horny made some mistakes and others turned into bonafide serial killers.

I think in order to be bet away with it youd have to have a job that sends you to larger cities on a semi-regular basis. The key is to not have any outliers in your information when they start searching. You have to appear routine day in and day out with reasons but within that is when you would need to do whatever it is that you do.

They've been replaced with spree killers which is honestly more scary.

It’s a lot harder to be anonymous today, and investigators are better.

There more likely to be drifters these days who travel for varying reasons but there’s undoubtably still serials working the underbelly of society.. police still have to make the connections and let’s be honest, it’s not easy work and we have been cutting departments and resources in many areas

Hardly. If a person decides they want to kill a bunch of people, there's ways around all the technology available today.

There is no lack of serial killers today that are roaming the country doing what they do. From my recall, if a person murders 3 people, they are considered a serial killer, especially if 3 random people and not some person killing several family members at one time or some stupid high school kid opening up on classmates because they bullied him/her.

Hell, the number is pretty disproportionate for long haul truckers that have been involved in killing sprees since they are all over the country in just a few days time. Pick up a hitchhiker, kill her and dump the body and be on their way. It's not odd to see a big rig parked on the side of a highway in the middle of nowhere at night from time to time.

Rural areas and especially places like national parks are still possible hunting grounds. In fact I often wonder if some of the folks that go missing each year in those parks (and its in the hundreds ) arent prey to serial killers.

Randall Lee Smith was finally caught around 2008 after killing 2 and attempting to murder two other people on the Appalachian trail between 1981 and 2008. He was finally caught because well, he was kind of an idiot, and tried to kill two guys who fought back and managed to get the authorities in time after a wild arse chase through the woods.

Even with DNA evidence and updated forensics it took him trying to bite off more than he could chew before he got caught.

I don’t know if investigators are better today, but they definitely have access to a ton of more information.

There maybe more basic outreach but society doesn’t care about the homeless drug addled person anymore today than 20 years ago.

Cell phone tower pings, license plate readers, ring doorbell cameras, etc. I'd say it's impossible to get away with abducting and murdering 30 total strangers these days.

Spread across jurisdictions, and with random lower risk targets and a long enough horizon— I’d say not impossible.

Plenty of agencies don’t talk. There’s epic dna backlogs. Plenty of police departments are epically understaffed so entering data or even really researching is a mess. And that’s ignoring as others mentioned the reality that there’s plenty of very rural low tech areas.

Hard to get away with shite these days. Everybody has a GPS tracking device in their hands. Cameras everywhere. Real time video. Maybe they are "obsolete "

Your average person could never get away with it now because of this, but I think there are a few out there who are really smart who we will likely never catch.

Exactly. You'd have to have your phone moving and be used the same as you typically do. I am sure there are some insane people that watch all the true crime shows and are motivated to figure ways to beat the system.

Maybe not obsolete, but more rare...

Hmmm……self driving vehicle? Put the phone in the self driving vehicle, set a course for anywhere and everywhere except for where you are?

Look, you do you want one super awesome kill where you wear the mayor's wife's tits as a hat, or do you want to OD a bunch of crusty hookers.

I don't make the rules buddy.

Bryan Kohberger is a serial killer who was caught after his first crime committed. The modern technology available did him in. I’m not sure he’d have been caught if you take those tools out of the mix. In addition to some mistakes by him.
