Warner Bros. will release the first of its new batch of “The Lord of the Rings” films in 2026, which will focus on Andy Serkis’s Gollum.

Original “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy filmmaker Peter Jackson and his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are producing the movie and “will be involved every step of the way,” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said during an earnings call Thursday.

The project is currently in the early stages of script development from writers Walsh and Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, and will “explore storylines yet to be told,” Zaslav said.

In a press release from Warner Bros. later Thursday morning, the studio revealed that the working title for the film is “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” and it will be directed by and star Serkis in his iconic titular role. The film will be executive produced by Ken Kamins, with Serkis and The Imaginarium’s Jonathan Cavendish.

So I guess it’s about Aragorn and Gandalf trying to hunt down Gollum before Mordor does?

No way McKellan or Mortensen return, right?

No way they’ll get Viggo to return for this, I think he’s so over the green screen CGI obsession Jackson has now

I devour anything LOTR but I gotta say this doesn’t really move the needle for me. Out of all the material in the appendices they could expand on they go with this?

"Our goal is to have a fully funded and produced film by fourth quarter of 2025, so that we will have an opportunity to shelve it and write if off of our taxes prior to the 2026 fiscal year.” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav mumbled during an earnings call Thursday.

If there is one thing we know for sure, it’s that Peter Jackson excels at adding his own ideas that aren’t in the books.

They are going to Star Wars this IP. Wasn't the Rings of Power enough? These people never learn.

My hope is that these banker fricks will eventually poison their well of "brands" that they don't respect, understand or do anything creative with. Sadly, they will have likely polluted great works of art for future generations... which I can't help but feel is part of the plan.

This has potential, but I don't understand why a movie about Gollum would be the first stop.
