My hope is that these banker fricks will eventually poison their well of "brands" that they don't respect, understand or do anything creative with. Sadly, they will have likely polluted great works of art for future generations... which I can't help but feel is part of the plan.

No way McKellan or Mortensen return, right?
Unless there’s some kind of contractual requirement, I seriously doubt it.
McKellan is turning 85 this month and having to act in front of nothing but green lumps for the Hobbit movies clearly stressed him out. I cannot see him signing on for this.

It was 17 years between Bilbo's birthday and when Gandalf returned to confirm his suspicions about the Ring. That's the problem created by the movies (which I love) in that they make it seem like it was only a short time afterwards (less than a year).
That's definitely something that non book readers wouldn't realize but I actually didn't mind that change. It added to the urgency of the journey. In the book by that point Frodo had essentially forgotten about it, whereas in the movie the tension and urgency was still here. I'm all for changing the source as little as possible, but I thought that was a good change.

The Hobbit films were bland enough.

LOL, no. Starting with Luke they demonstrated they lost focus.
Just because they didn't do it right with Luke doesn't mean everything they did was a miss.

Just to be clear I don't like the idea, but I think the urgency you mention would kind of shift to confusion and alarm about why he is coming back after a long time without his usual warm greeting and getting straight to business.

Should have been two films, not 3, not one. I still enjoyed them, though they were clearly not as good the LOTR trilogy.

There are very good fan edits online if you can find them. The one I like the most is three and a half hours long, and save for Smaug being covered in molten gold at one point, it all seems to work pretty seemlessly.

This has potential, but I don't understand why a movie about Gollum would be the first stop.

Maybe they don’t have the rights, but Beren and Luthien, Children of Hurin, the Tale of Earendil, and the Fall of Gondolin I think would be better.

I was under the impression Amazon has the rights to these, which would be unfortunate.

Why would Sauron release Gollum? He ended up leading the Ring back to Mount Doom

Could be…good, great or a train wreck.
If the Hobbit trilogy is any indication, I woudln't hold my breath.

He set him loose to go find the Ring for him, because the second Gollum does find the Ring, he will put it on and alert Sauron and the Nazgûl to his presence. Gollum was also connected to the Ring for so long that he could sense its evil presence, which is what attracted Gollum to Mordor sensing Sauron’s evil rising again and mistaking it for the Ring itself.
It never remotely occurred to Sauron that Gollum would dare return to Mordor on his own or that the Free Races would try to destroy the Ring. Gollum does not seem like a likely guide regardless, but in the end, Sauron is largely killed by his own arrogance.

They’re going to milk these franchises until they’re dried up husks

Of course, these IPs are about the only thing bringing in large audiences

Well, it's not Amazon, so there's that. And War of the Rohirrim is looking potentially very interesting... we'll see.
