I used to think so until I went to a few Dead & Co. shows. He's a fantastic guitarist from what I've seen, but I also haven't listened to much of his solo stuff.

Meh. Yes his songs are very poppy, but dude is a killer guitarist. His Dead and Co. stuff is very good as is his John Mayer Trio band. His Bold as Love cover is really good.
