Last time they claimed this, they got their asses sued off because people had turned in the plates but Public Safety didn’t cancel them in a timely manner.

I had a guy come into my office who tried to turn in his plate, but was told "that plate was turned in a year ago." The guy had the damn plate in his hand. It took three trips and a lawyer letter to get them to realize that it was physically impossible for him to have the correct plate in his hand if it had truly been turned into the DMV.

The exact same thing happened to me several years ago. I sold a car and went to turn in the plate and I was told that the registration had been cancelled already and they refused to take the plate. A few months later, I get a notice in the mail that the insurance had lapsed. I went back to the OMV and they acted like they didn’t believe me when I told them I had tried to come in and cancel it a few months prior. After much argument and of course forcing me to go full Karen and ask to speak to a supervisor, they allowed me to cancel it and only charged me a $5 fee. I didn’t want to pay-even though it was only $5-just on principle but it was worth it to just be done with it. Incompetence at its finest.
