Used to play catcher so trying to think of the benefits.

Say your right knee is down, it would make moving and blocking to your left easier but moving to your right much worse. You want your legs to be spread fairly wide to cover/block a wider area and having a right knee down and moving to the right would make it harder to get that leg out imo.

I can't imagine catching with one knee down and the pads your able to use on your calves make it pretty easy on your knees so I don't really see one knee down being much less wear on the body.

And those kids that live to be 60 will suffer with bad knees and backs going on into their latter years!!

same here, former catcher, that would get you benched back in the day, there must be some private guru coach out there with travel ball cred that’s pushing this trend

Perhaps the data shows that shooting more 3s leads to more team points. While the data shows every LSU catcher being pretty, darn bad at blocking balls in the dirt when starting on one knee.

Catching on one knee has data to support it, plain and simple. You don’t like it, but that doesn’t make it wrong.

The pros are going to whatever gives them a better chance to win. Teams have proven they’ll follow the data religiously at this point. It’s not a fad.

It’s not traditional, sure, but it’s a better way on the whole.

You think he missed a ball through his legs because of already being on one knee?

I have never seen a season where more low pitches have gone through the catcher's legs, often causing runs and even game losing runs.

He tried to glove a ball that he should have been in position to *block* back toward the plate, but couldn’t move his feet because his right knee stayed on the ground and his arse (literally) couldn’t get into position. You’re illuminating your lack of knowledge of the game, and the mechanics of blocking a baseball

And yet you have some trying to argue that starting on a knee isn’t an issue.

This didn’t routinely happen when the catchers started on their feet.
