Maybe he was playing at a HS that opened more doors for him?

Division I college coaches don’t want to develop because if they develop someone too good, they’ll go in the portal. they want to win and generally older players are better for that. It’s risky to take a freshman when who knows if he’ll be there or you’ll be there a few years

A really good AAU program and league gets a kid tons of looks from college coaches. High school ball? Not so much.

Not going to go into details because I don't want to cause local drama, but my nephew wasn't necessarily helped much by his hs coaches. But talent and skill win out.
