Nephew is a pretty good player. 6'3/170 with a nice shot, excellent court sense and pretty damn good handles. Good enough to play at the next level apparently.

So he signed today.

DAMN, the recruitment landscape for basketball has changed so damn much. My brother was about the same skill level and size as my nephew. When he was a senior, he was getting letters from schools across the country weekly. The mailbox was full every day. His grades pushed him out of some opportunities, but they all had interest junior and senior year.

My nephews process? It was worlds apart. Universities don't seem to want to go after high school kids anymore outside of the TOP 150. I guess it makes sense. WHy waste the resources going to tournaments and games when you can just let the JUCOs do that, and if they pan out, you scoop them up the next year.

Either way, I'm proud of the kid. He worked hard. He achieved this goal, and I wish him the best of luck.

Maybe he was playing at a HS that opened more doors for him?

Division I college coaches don’t want to develop because if they develop someone too good, they’ll go in the portal. they want to win and generally older players are better for that. It’s risky to take a freshman when who knows if he’ll be there or you’ll be there a few years

Best route nowadays may be to start at a program/level lower than the player's ability so that he has the best chance of 1) getting PT and 2) move up to a higher level.

Start at a higher level, you risk sitting on the bench, then transfer lower when the year ends. Then if you do well, you transfer back up to a higher level where PT again will be up in the air. Seems like a waste of 4 years.
