I make this argument all the time about how our soccer output would be so much more insane if 5% of these non-pro level guys dedicated their life to soccer early.

I don’t know how much overlay there would be between NBA guys and soccer guys. The best player in the world (Haaland) looks gigantic and he’s only 6’4

Yes he is.

No nba player can be ‘dropped’ into the NFL as not get ran the fook over

He's right if you go back to HS/college when these athletes are less developed.

At the pro level there's no chance.

People completely underestimate how finely tuned pro athletes are to their sport/position.

There's a reason 99% of football players are playing one position.

It’s dumb to take Austin Rivers seriously in anything

I said non-pro level, not NBA. Tons of guys with heights starting with 5 playing ball in high school and college (there is a lot more college basketball than even D1).

The frick?

He's not even the best player on his team

and he’s only 6’4

Well, we also produce an insane amount of taller guys who have the ability to develop skills of younger guys. That's kind of the dream, but that requires our top athletes, and that is unlikely to ever happen.

That's why I'm focusing on the elite athletes who have no shot and chase the dream. If we could even get a small chunk of these people to dedicate themselves to soccer, we could have insane output. We are developing pretty regular solid-great talent now with our D-level athletes. Imagine if we could bump that up to C-level (with our huge population).

Didn’t he get 2nd in the player of the year award despite not winning shite at the International Level?

Yea it seems like most countries where soccer is the 2nd sport or worse, their national team completely sucks. Soccer here is comfortably 4th or 5th and we are at least decent

I'd say probably about 30-50% at least played high school football.

And higher percentage of players played basketball growing up and probably still do to stay in shape and have fun. I would bet a high number of NFL players have played basketball multiple times in the last year and very low # of NBA players have touched a football in years.

Is this where we bring up Antonio Gates? Or Jimmy graham? Their transitions were pretty flawless

Seems to me that really what we’re talking about is how they’re an overlap in athletic traits needed to play small forward in basketball and tight end in football. Because every nfl player brought up was a tight end. someone brought up Julius peppers but he was a football player on scholarship to play football who decided to walk on to the basketball team, not really the same.

Well that’s been the supporting argument for Rivers comments but it’s not a good one. He said just take 30 current players and the justification has been to use 3-4 examples throughout history consisting of non NBA players. To call that a stretch is more than generous.

These comparison threads always crack me up. People claiming NBA players aren’t athletic enough? Strong enough? Not the right height? Just insanity

That's because if you're awarded a scholarship and play more than 1 sport, it's automatically counted as a FB scholarship. He was a highly-rated BBall recruit Calling him a "walk on" is the most bullshite of technicalities.

And this discussion is bigger than just TE/PF, it's just that if you're in the height/athleticism range for QB/RB/DB/WR, you're almost guaranteed to pick basketball.

A better statement of the argument is that the NBA has dozens (possibly hundreds) of people who could have theoretically played in the NFL.

The NFL has a much, much smaller population who could project as a candidate for the NBA.

DK tried track, a sport that is actually somewhat transferable and isn't skill dependent, and got smoked by real sprinters.

He is the kind of NFL guy who is absolutely athletic and tall enough to play. He put on a show in the all star game last year.

In the NBA? Unlikely. His COD is way too shite for a point guard.
