Students may not care, but Admin has to do batch processing for financial aid, class rank, scholarship eligibility, etc. it’s a big pain for admin.
Provosts tend to be on edge and send lots of reminders at the end of the semester even if there isn’t a planned delay

The registrar can override that nonsense at my institution.
Faculty Senate can protest. Provost says "pound sand".
