Even just employeed plumbers can make a lot more than that.
Having said that, I would want any kid of mine to go to college (unless they had like a bad learning disability). Crawling under a house in the heat of summer sounds brutal.

I would advise anyone who has kids who are both good in school, and interested in trade school...
Pleas, please, please look in a construction management degree. In 20 years, a Superintendent without a degree will be rare.
Your kid can get the best of both worlds. Not be trapped in a cubicle all day, actually have some autonomy in their schedule, AND make white collar money.
The construction industry Is dying for more college educated Superintendents. Going rate is 100-150k/year in Houston. Can be achieved in 5 years if you just show up on time and learn.

The worst advice I got in high school was “you have plenty of time to figure out what you want to do”. Yes it may be true but you need to at least have a good idea of what you like and dislike. I graduated hs and didn’t have a CLUE what I wanted to do so I went to LSU with 0 motivation and lasted 2 years taking bullshite classes and jumping from 1 major to the next. So it’s better to kinda figure it out early rather then wait till graduation time

I have 2 daughters and I will push them to learn a trade and start a business eventually. College degrees are meaning less and less .
That show community is pretty brilliant in exploring that when one of the characters actually goes into HVAC repair school from community college

College is worth it for getting midday sex from sorority chicks alone. It is the last bastion of freedom before one has to enter the rat race. Best thing to do is get them to study something meaningful. Finance alone is a decent degree and is not difficult and can open doors. If the kid simply has no interest in college that’s fine but that’s actually a harder route and they need to understand that. That is not the easy route - it will be fraught with difficulty.

Surprised at all the responses acting like college is the end all be all. I know software engineers who did a program for 3 months and within 6 months had an $80k/year job, in a profession where salaries go up exponentially pretty quickly. No college necessary.
Electricians do pretty damn well too. As do air traffic controllers. And other trade school professions.
Then again this board is a bunch of boomers who grew up when college guaranteed a good job and when it was $500/semester. Now it’s $10k-$25k. Which means most people have to take out a loan for a degree that doesn’t guarantee an amazing job, so they never pay back the loans, and the boomers complain that they have to pay for them.
Not that I’m for student loan forgiveness, but boomers of all people should be encouraging kids to go to trade schools / software programs over 4 year college. Too many fluff courses and completely worthless majors.

It's VERY hard to get a job in 2024 after completing a coding bootcamp. It might have been fine in the past, but it's bad now.

Our oldest (now 30) did not know what he wanted to do until middle of Senior year.
He decided he wanted to learn a trade and was able to attend trade school for welding after Christmas break.
After graduation he landed a job with a fab shop and would work during the day and attend a CC (Community College) in the evenings to earn his welding certs.
After about 6mo his CC instructor hooked him up with a job interview. Our oldest tested out and went to work with a construction company and eventually achieved his goal to work on the gas pipeline as a welder by age 20.
He saved his money and was able to live off his perdiem for a little over 4yrs. He moved up in the business and now is 1 of their inspectors and still makes bank. (Base pay 85k + perdiem + monthly fuel allowance + 1,150mo vehicle allowance)
He married at age 25, bought a house, he and his wife has 2 girls and is debt free. Works 10 days/off 4 and is less than 3hrs away from home so he comes home every weekend.
Our youngest graduated last weekend with a Civil Engineering degree and will be working with the same company as our oldest as a project manager. Starts in June.
Bottom line: know what your kids interests are and help steer them in that direction. College degree may or may not be needed and our definition of success is not on how much you make, but rather if you enjoy/love what your doing.
