I think the economics of it are changing. The cost is sky rocketing, and the final product is plummeting.

I have young kids, but I readily admit I am not sure what the next 10 years holds for higher education. Less jobs require that degree in favor of certificates in a particular field. AI with some heavy headwinds on software and other tech fields.

Who knows... I'm not rigid one way or the other. Wife and I both have our degrees and were firmly raised in the "college is the only way" generation.

could possibly be a combined product of "if they don't meet the standards we must lower the standards," DEI hiring, and enough non-college educated people getting into positions with HR/hiring

same here, maybe it isn't the only way, but having that degree holds the key to a lot of doors that would otherwise be inaccessable without ii

I've just told them from when they were little that if they go to college, they must get a STEM degree. Or its trade school or the Marines.

So the older one is a freshman in college working on a BS.

The younger one (Jr in HS) is damn determined to play football in college so I guess he's going as well. He's got a great GPA w all AP classes and a high SAT. He's been invited to a number of Jr football days at some smaller schools and is now figuring out which camps to attend this summer. He'll make it.

If your kid doesn't know exactly what they want to do, why push them to a 4 year college. Work and go to a CC. The credits transfer and you'll save big time $$. When they are ready to go off they'll be more mature and taking classes that go toward their major.

There are still ways to send an uncertain kid to college without condemning them to lives of debt and/or communism

20 years ago college was key. Now not so much.

I think you may have this backwards. A college degree is a requirement to almost any job worth a shite these days

yea i have no clue wtf he is talking about

- want to be an operator at a plant- requires a degree

- want to be in any sort of management- requires a degree

other than the trades, I dunno if a single job that is even somewhat respectable that doesnt require them.

I have a kid the same age and I think you are on the right track. If a specialized degree is required, it makes sense.

My child wants to play college athletics but I will advise her to pick a useful degree and not general studies (so had too...).

He's a freshman in HS and he hasn't shown much interest in anything that makes sense? Don't worry, he'll discover girls soon.

Jeez dude, let him figure out a few things in high school first before talking him out of any future. Yes, trade schools are good, but I wouldn't talk my kid out of getting an engineering degree for it.

I will absolutely encourage my kids to not attend college unless they are pursuing a specific job that requires a degree like nursing or engineering. Otherwise trade school or work elsewhere till you figure out what you want to do. My biggest regret in life is taking on student loans debt so I won't put that burden on them

Seems silly to limit their college choices to two professions.
