Rome, Italy.

I had a friend that made the decision to move to Italy after a great vacation experience. They said they were tired of the rat race, the fast pace, and really liked the laid back culture of the Italians.

They moved over to Italy and rented for 6 months. They didn’t renew the lease.

They mentioned the Train strikes, arbitrary hours of operation at the stores, aggressive pan handlers, mail strikes where the mail got thrown in the river, and other inconveniences that we take for granted here in the US.

It’s a nice place to visit for sure but living there can be very inconvenient if you care about that sort of thing.

Maybe so, however I see it quite frequently. I also see several engineers that move in from out of state and don't leave b/c they love it here.

A guy I took a driving class from did this. He and his wife sold everything and bought a boat. Going on boat #3 (sell, not sink), a performance catamaran this time and like year 5. Living the dream.

Fort Myers, Florida. Warm weather, near the ocean, strong economic possibilities, good politics, not too big of a city.

I only know 1 person who left and went back. Took me longer to leave than it should have, leaving shows you how much easier life is other places without all the bullshite and corruption. To your other comment about property taxes in Texas, sure they’re high but I get a ton of benefits from them, where in Louisiana I literally got nothing for the amount I paid.

Enjoy the traffic and egregious property taxes.

Traffic in Spicewood?

They only have like 1 gas station a BBQ joint and a caution light.

That's my biggest fear from retiring abroad.

We spent a couple of weeks in Ireland and though about retiring there.
But then you hear about strikes, socialized medicine, random shopkeeping hours makes you appreciate the efficiency of the US.

Still searching for the best combo of US efficiency and slower Euro culture. Most places in America that are laid back are full of fats and rednecks unfortunately. And this is coming from a former fat with a slightly red neck.

I have a location picked out for when we retire. It is secret. If I tell ,everyone will descend upon it like locusts. It is not in louisiana .

71 can be very busy. Plus there’s constant construction.

Absolutely, and planning to when we retire. Somewhere with four seasons...Carolinas, Vermont, West Virginia.

I left to establish my career and then returned.

I’ve gone where my career took me for 20 years and lived for a time in Tampa, Atlanta, Houston, Memphis, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. I also travel almost weekly for work and have spent a lot of time in most major US cities (and some smaller ones) plus international cities like Toronto, Istanbul, etc.

I know more than most how imperfect Louisiana is…but I love this place. Glad to be back.

But my favorite town outside of Louisiana is pre-pandemic Chicago. That place is awesome. For some reason it gets a lot of hate. It does have a high costs of living. I will probably never move back.

For retirement (20+ years away for me), I’m hoping that either Mississippi gets more developed or Louisiana drops income tax on retirement income. I wouldn’t mind either place outside of Jackson, Shreveport, or New Orleans. I really like Lafayette and Ocean Springs for that.

The irony is this board loves to complain about LA but statistically people are less likely to move away from LA than most other states. We always talk about our best and brightest leaving but never talk about how many end up coming back

Well, that begs the question: What keeps you in Louisiana?

For me, it's my spouse. She is why we moved back here and why we have stayed (wants to be close to her family). Without that, I would be gonzo.

I suspect that is why many remain (and why many of those that have left end up back here).

Southern girls (especially Louisiana girls) want to be close to mommy and daddy.
