I've watched about every towing test TFL has done. On everything from a ridgeline at max rating to the f:550. GMs 6.2 and ford's 3.5 are monsters for towing.
We arent even really discussing an overloaded tow... We're talking within the rating.
Y'all would shite watching what I towed with my old xterra. How about a 2005 f250 AND the box trailer it was towing when it broke down.

I agree however for people who don't tow that much, the feeling of a heavy load acting on a truck makes them nervous. Which in turn makes them drive slower, from a power standpoint the truck is fine.
I use to hook up all types of loads to a 2001suburban, loved that thing.

I once towed my 31’ camper with my 2003 Escalade. A short distance. Once. It pulled it just fine, but that camper walked me all over the road. OTOH, I pull my boat all over South Louisiana with it, and full of fuel and other crap, it’s likely at 6-7K pounds.
This has been a great discussion as I struggle with the same question as OP in deciding on a new truck. I didn’t know Enterprise rented tow vehicles, so buying a 1/2 ton and renting a bigger one is the way to go. Right now, I’ve got a very giving friend that tows my camper back and forth to Grand Isle twice a year for the cost of gas, and buying him dinner at Hurricane Hole.

Few years ago when flying into Montana to hunt, we learned to rent from them to get the 3/4 ton. I don’t think it was more expensive than a half ton rental either.

Here's the issue though and something to seriously consider. Sure you can rent a vehicle to tow. OP was talking about for a storm. I have no idea here, but I'm going to guess if a storm is approaching any rental to tow is going to be in EXTREMELY high demand.
Now if you rented it from Louisiana, drove to Pcola to pick up the boat, and then returned it to Louisiana where there wasn't a storm that's not an issue.
I'm not sure I'd want to rely on renting a truck in a hurricane situation though.

From the various boat ramp YT channels, people use the HomeDepot rental trucks a lot to take their boats to the ramp.

I saw a guy coming towards me on a curvy highway yesterday, towing a fairly tall, large, center console. The boat was swaying all over the road, making the truck sway as well. Didn’t notice whether it was a GMC or Chevrolet half-ton, I was too busy keeping an eye on that boat coming across the centerline. I thought of this thread when I saw him coming.

I’ve got about a half dozen friends with 3/4 ton trucks that will pull me out in a storm situation. If I can rent one for the twice a year trips going and coming, that will save my favors for a true crisis.

Go for it. Sounds reasonable. I've never been one to be safe though.

I used to pull my goose rig from St. Cloud, Minnesota to grande prairie, AB with my old tundra, I figured my rig fully loaded for Canada weighed 10k-11k pounds. It hauled it fine, granted I watched the fuel gauge move, but I never once felt unsafe or uncomfortable.
