1. Democracy is not mutually exclusive from either of those systems. In fact, the more of a true democracy (populism) you have, the more likely the Great Unwashed will vote for versions of those two.

2. Case in point, he doesn't call himself a communist or socialist. He calls himself a democratic socialist.

There's nothing ironic or self-contradictory about his stances.
