Well in the case of last year, we had the worst P5 defense arguably in the entire country and definitely the worst in our program's history.

That is an extreme example. If our defense was 60th in the country last year, we might be in the playoff.

How'd that elite defense work out for Iowa? A school that plays nobodies for 90% of the year.

Again, a top 75 defense stops one TD from Ole Miss, and stops Milroe from running all over. Milroe outside of LSU had 141 carries for 376 yards (2.6 ypc).


ETA: I just looked it up. No offense that averaged less than 35 points per game, has won the championship since 2006 Florida. Only once in that span was 35 points a game not a top 15 overall offense. However, if you go back to 2010, LSU, Ohio St, and Auburn all won championships despite giving up 21+ points per game.
