Elite offense with a top 10 defense would be ideal.
But I think elite offense with a defense in the top 15-20 has you in it at the end of the season too.

Easy. Elite defense, if you cannot stop the other team from scoring a great offense is useless. Teams that have a good defense win championships.

That wasn’t the quartetbacks fault. All were highly rated out of high school. Les was just a failure at developing QBs and his offense was far from QB friendly.

This idea that LSU was competitive with "just a strong defense" under Miles is false. When Miles had bad offenses (2008, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2016) LSU was a bad football team.

No. It’s not an “idea” it’s a fact that Les could not build a consecutively good offense. He had spots here and there that were good but the majority of his time at LSU our offense was horrible. Les thought the only responsibility of the QB was to hand the ball off left or right on a toss dive. He had no clue what to do with QBs.

Would say Defense until I saw Burrow hang 49 on Oklahoma by halftime.

Current rules make an elite D unlikely. I do miss those low scoring, uber-physical brawls though. When a single missed tackle can win or lose the game the tension just builds and builds

How'd that elite offense work out last year? Defense wins championships!

I would definitely say an Elite offense. You are never out of the game. We have had both in the not so distant past and nothing is more frustrating than a defense setting the tone and dominating, only to see an inept offense go three and out 8 times per half

This, I think.

2019 defense was nowhere near elite and is arguably the greatest team ever

Wasn't elite but it had nfl talent at every level.

And there were a ton of things that made them not appear elite. I think if our offense was average and used up more clock, that defense could've absolutely been elite. They also never had to be relied on by themselves to win games. When it came down to it, they were very talented and would make the play when we needed it.

But our offense scored very quickly and often, we were up a lot in a lot of games and backups came in, and honestly the pressure wasn't on them to win games. That stuff makes a difference.

Well in the case of last year, we had the worst P5 defense arguably in the entire country and definitely the worst in our program's history.

That is an extreme example. If our defense was 60th in the country last year, we might be in the playoff.

Depends on the other side of the ball.

You can win a championship being elite and mediocre on offense or defense.

You cannot win being elite and terrible on offense or defense.

I'd take an elite offense with an AVERAGE defense over anything we had once The Les Miles System kicked in.

If we remember, even in 2019 the defense was giving up lots of offense (and points, at times) until they reached Arkansas/A&M.....

My concern is what happens when you can’t cross the 50? I just don’t ever want to see that again.

We are talking elite. Give me elite offense if I can at least have an average defense. Just not historically bad.

I would much rather be that than say Iowa. I think an elite offense is still more capable of keeping up with anyone in today’s football. You could argue elite defense with average offense is better than vice versus, but it sure is nice knowing your offense can name their score on anyone, even elite defenses:

None of those elite defenses could stop that 2019 offense. It was beautiful. Give me more of that.

Defense, it will give your offense more chances and you will always be in the game, besides you have more of a chance to score on turnovers with an elite defense and you can also play the field position better.

I think you misinterpreted my post.

the "idea" i was talking about was "Les Miles had great teams with bad offenses." He didn't. The teams mentioned above had elite defenses and bad offenses, making them bad (by LSU standards) teams.

I'll defend Les pre 2008. After that, he was never the same.

How'd that elite defense work out for Iowa? A school that plays nobodies for 90% of the year.

Again, a top 75 defense stops one TD from Ole Miss, and stops Milroe from running all over. Milroe outside of LSU had 141 carries for 376 yards (2.6 ypc).

ETA: I just looked it up. No offense that averaged less than 35 points per game, has won the championship since 2006 Florida. Only once in that span was 35 points a game not a top 15 overall offense. However, if you go back to 2010, LSU, Ohio St, and Auburn all won championships despite giving up 21+ points per game.

Remember when they used to say offense sells tickets, defense wins championships. No longer the case imho fwiw tbh.

Michigan last year, UGA in 2022.

Elite defenses can stifle anyone, and wear you down. People panic about 1/9, but forget the earlier game (9-6). We stayed in the game at Bama long enough that we wore them down, and ran over them late.

Now with the rule changes, it's harder to have an elite defense, as everything is geared to favor the offense. Seems like you need a GOOD defense and an elite offense. But without the defense, you might still be losing games like Ole Miss, where you just couldn't score enough to win.

Defense, it's always been defense... Until very recently. The game has changed. I'd have to go with offense in the 20-teens and 2020s.

Defense wins championships, offense wins games.
See last year!!
If you cant score ya can't win.
Give me a sub par offense and an elite defense all day everyday.

How so? Even with an elite offense you better have a top 15 scoring defense.
You can win it all with a mediocre offense with a top 10 or top 5 defense.
