Food/drink in NYC is the easier part to figure out since there are abundant food options in most neighborhoods that tourist visit. Pick the things you want to see/do, then figure out food and drink.
With 24 hours for a first trip I would do some combo of: Staten Island ferry (there and back) to see Statue of Liberty, walk to World Trade Center memorial site, walk around, and/or visit memorial, quick walk to wall street, subway to midtown, walk to times square and look around for a few minutes, Friday evening Broadway show, lunch/dinner in Chinatown, visit Empire State Building or other high rise with viewing area, after dinner drink in a nice west village spot.
Thats a lot I know.
