eh.. most of what we think of as the British empire wasn’t claimed by them until after the American revolution. All of their colonial holdings in Africa and the far east were taken in the 1800s and the crown didn’t seize control of India until 1857 if memory serves. Before that it was in control of the British east India company for around 150 years if I remember correctly. Still British control but not in a governmental sense
