Interested on some opinions. Say that you have worked for 10 years with same company and really busted your behind (working 70ish hours a week). Company offers an opportunity to double your income to make really good money (700k) but it would require you to continue the same type of workload with really no end in site. Do you accept that offer or try to find something else at another company making a lot less money (150-200k) but working a normal work load.

What say you? Curious to see some responses.

For $700K, my family would pack my bags for me to go work anywhere on earth for any amount of time.

So make twice the salary to work as hard as you already are, or take a 50% pay cut to work half as hard?

I’d consider fricking Lizzo for $700k a year.

The end is whenever you want it to be, at that salary.

Much sooner than if you cut to $150-200K and work till a regular retirement age.

ETA: And if you're halfway decent at it, you'll be head hunted to a better (either more money or fewer hours) gig anyway.

For 700k keep going. Invest in retirement and use time value of money to your benefit. Also, build up a few years of experience at that pay grade and add to resume. Could be a valuable launch pad into another equivalent job with better hours.

I'd easily take 200k with normal hours vs 70 hour weeks unless that 700k comes with like 12 weeks of vacation. No one ever gets to the end and says i wish i worked more.

What is your family situation? If you have young kids it's a no brainer.

If given the choice between 70hr workweeks at $700k and a 9-5 at $150-200k I’d work the 70’s for as long as I could do it, budget based on the $150-200k, and then take a long arse vacation before finding an easier gig.

Depends where you’re at in life though. If you have young kids, there are moments you miss that you can’t get back.

I’d prob take the money, work another 3 years and retire.

I’m to the point in my career that the money isn’t worth it if you don’t need it. I’m a high level executive and my life has gotten worse with every ‘promotion’. More stress, more people shite and drama to deal with, etc. I live a pretty modest lifestyle and don’t ‘need’ a ton of money.

At 50, I plan on retiring or stepping back into a junior level role (for benefits) cruising. I don’t need to have my ego and pride fed by a job title.

This.

If I were 25 years old, I might take the other job for a couple of years. No more.

At this point, frick that. Dont need the money, and I value my time and energy.

Assume you meant 70k

Bc a dumbass making 700k wouldn’t ask this ridiculous circumstantial question

Went through a similar situation a few years ago. Take the money. If you're working 70ish hours you're likely not being clocked, you just have responsibilities that typically take you around 70 hours to complete. Learn to delegate more and consolidate certain things and you'll turn that 70 into 50 before you know it.

For that much money I'd do it for a few years. I live about as cheaply as I did 10 years ago when I was making 32k a year. I could stack up money for a few years, pay off my house, then get another job. Live very comfortably and retire a few years earlier than I'd planned.

I have a great work/life balance where I work now. I rarely work Fridays, generous vacation allotment which I actually can take no problem or worries, and am treated really well. I've turned down more money a few times over the past couple of years but not double. I could imagine though if I had been working 70 hours per week for 10 years I'd probably be really burnt out.

The $700k can be stashed and get you to "retirement" much earlier. The other side of it is that there's no guarantee your health allows you to get that far.

It depends a lot on your situation. I have two elderly parents to care for so I need more flexibility than I did when I was younger. People with kids probably need more work/life balance as well.
