How much of a joke is it that Star Wars was ever thought to be equal to Lord of the Rings?

At least in retrospect?

Like this was an actual argument in the 00s and the 10s. Yes, Star Wars was great, but quite frankly before the sequel trilogy it consisted of two masterpieces, two OK films, and two shitty films.

Then Disney happens where we’ve gotten maybe three OK films, one decent series, and everything from there has been pure shite. Like just garbage, and it has irreparably harmed the OT. Like it’s ruined it and got so bad that you have to go back and question your entire childhood.

I’m just going to come out and say it: Star Wars is the most overrated thing of all time. It hurts me to say that, but it’s true.

Now compare that to Lord of the Rings. It too had terrible prequels (granted they got the scenes that they had to get right) and an attempt to rape its property by terrible tv series and spin offs. But Lord of the Rings remains unharmed. The books and the original films all completely stand up impervious to damage.

Just looking back as a flowing narrative, it was never even close. Check list:

The Story: Better
The Characters: Better
The Dialogue: Better
The Action: Better
The Setting: Better
The Tension: Better
The Arcs: Better
The Stakes: Higher
The Score: …Well Relatively Equal There

But other than the music and the effects (which can’t fairly be compared given their times), it’s better in every regard. This was never even an argument even if people pretended it was.

I'll disagree with you here. ROTJ is a great film as well. There’s nothing in LOTR that hits me as much as Luke and Vader battling in front of the emperor.

I'm guessing that some modern day Disney Star Wars shills or NPCs were attempting to make this comparison?

I've never heard anyone say SW was 'equal to' LOTR. Either the movies or the source material.

lotr will never have the legacy of characters that Star Wars has. At least 3 characters in SW with almost infinite greater name recognition than anything in lotr.

You clearly have no common sense or objectivity. Luke, Joda, and Vader will hall each be longer remembered and referenced than anything in lotr, nerd.

It’s crushing to think how different things could have been with Star Wars. TFA was a competent film that was completely undone (as was the OT) by TLJ.

It’s been a train wreck since. I got to the point, where it was hard to not watch the train continue to wreck over itself. I almost got satisfaction out of seeing it unfold. While I still somewhat still do, I just don’t care anymore. I saw TFA on television yesterday and I was just in a catatonic stupor watching it. SW used to be my favorite IP.

I feel nothing like this for LotR. It’s far better than SW in every way.

Star Wars is dead to me.
Waiting anxiously for Dune Messiah.
The LOTR trilogy still holds its ground.
The hobbit trilogy is weak at best.
Will not watch woke middle earth.

Star Wars has the better prequel trilogy. The Hobbit and Rings of Power are as bad as anything Disney has done to Star Wars

I’m not a fanatic for either one, but Star Wars probably made a bigger splash in the public consciousness in its time. It was sort of a cultural event.

Referring to "Star Wars", I'm considering that as the original trilogy. There's too much secondary and tertiary stuff fixed to that (good and bad) for me to compare the entire menu to a small franchise like LOTR.

If we're looking at them as "original works", LOTR wins hands down. Star Wars is a derivation of two many other franchises for it to stand up to the Tolken novels.

But as a series of three films... I'll watch Star Wars/Strikes Back/Return on a 24 hour loop (and have done so) but have never had the desire to rewatch a minute of LOTR. Star Wars and its two sequels each have their own distinct feel while remaining one cohesive story. LOTR just seemed like one long slog to me.

To be fair to Lucas, he didn't have the wonderful road map that Tolkien gave Jackson. Now, that doesn't mean Jackson didn't knock it out of the park himself, because it certainly isn't easy adapting something so faithfully. Lucas, however, was coming up with his own stuff.

There is something interesting about this. I was in 6th grade when Phantom Menace came and no one at school ever talked about Star Wars or liked it honestly. If people did like it they got picked on, what’s funny now seems everyone loves it who hated it back then.
