How much of a joke is it that Star Wars was ever thought to be equal to Lord of the Rings?

At least in retrospect?
Like this was an actual argument in the 00s and the 10s. Yes, Star Wars was great, but quite frankly before the sequel trilogy it consisted of two masterpieces, two OK films, and two shitty films.
Then Disney happens where we’ve gotten maybe three OK films, one decent series, and everything from there has been pure shite. Like just garbage, and it has irreparably harmed the OT. Like it’s ruined it and got so bad that you have to go back and question your entire childhood.
I’m just going to come out and say it: Star Wars is the most overrated thing of all time. It hurts me to say that, but it’s true.
Now compare that to Lord of the Rings. It too had terrible prequels (granted they got the scenes that they had to get right) and an attempt to rape its property by terrible tv series and spin offs. But Lord of the Rings remains unharmed. The books and the original films all completely stand up impervious to damage.
Just looking back as a flowing narrative, it was never even close. Check list:
The Story: Better
The Characters: Better
The Dialogue: Better
The Action: Better
The Setting: Better
The Tension: Better
The Arcs: Better
The Stakes: Higher
The Score: …Well Relatively Equal There
But other than the music and the effects (which can’t fairly be compared given their times), it’s better in every regard. This was never even an argument even if people pretended it was.

I'll disagree with you here. ROTJ is a great film as well. There’s nothing in LOTR that hits me as much as Luke and Vader battling in front of the emperor.

I'm guessing that some modern day Disney Star Wars shills or NPCs were attempting to make this comparison?
I've never heard anyone say SW was 'equal to' LOTR. Either the movies or the source material.

What Disney did to SW, Amazon did to LOTR.

In the OK film I refer to, I agree with you that the Throne Room Sequence is a Masterpiece. The problem is the rest of the film isn’t.

Amazon has attempted what Disney did to Star Wars, but no, they have not succeeded. All I have to do is talk about the sequence of the creation of the Rings of Power to make that series complete bullshite.

the Star Wars OT kicks arse.
it’s absolutely as good as the LOTR trilogy.

Mid 70's- pinnacle of Sci Fi at that point is probably 2001. Pinnacle of Space Fantasy is probably Star Trek. The technical achievement that is Star Wars proper (the original movie) shits on those. Your battles aren't static images of space ships with exposition telling you what is happening (occurs a lot in ST as for example), you have things in motion. The tailgunner scene, and the attack on the Death Star. There really was no precursor in space films, the inspiration is the dogfight scenes from war movies. Glowing tracers everywhere.
In LOTR, the only real film achievement is the use of camera angles and tricks to downsize the Hobbits and Dwarves. Everything else is done very well, but not new.
LOTR is THE classic fantasy, while Star Wars (original) was an Errol Flynn adventure with every element it could toss in. Rope swings, dogfights, gunfights, bar fights, sword fights, you even get a desert mugging of Luke. And the underrated brilliance of Artoo and Threepio's Laurel and Hardy comedy- understand that Threepio had to carry the entire bit, Artoo is just beeping, we only get Threepio's responses to follow along. Yet the scenes were so well done that Artoo became beloved.

In 1978 Star Wars was a special effects spectacle. Its story is more concentrated but executed masterfully.
Also Star Wars did toys and merchandising on an enormous scale.
LOTR was a different time and era. It’s a completely different thing.
You don’t have to compare the two.
But for the record the Emperor would but hump that giant tower with pink eye and that dude riding the brontosaurus cosplaying as the Litch King.

quote:lotr will never have the legacy of characters that Star Wars has. At least 3 characters in SW with almost infinite greater name recognition than anything in lotr.
The Characters: Better
You clearly have no common sense or objectivity. Luke, Joda, and Vader will hall each be longer remembered and referenced than anything in lotr, nerd.

The Lord of the Rings was the second most read novel of the 20th century after the Bible, so no, everyone understands the references. If you talk about Sauron, Mordor, the One Ring, Orcs, or Gollum, everyone knows what you’re talking about.
