Yup. Blackberry rolled out the swipes/gestures in 2013. Problem was it was so far ahead that people weren't ready for it. Apple copied it a few years later.

Once the blue/green bubble problem is solved, 50% of US iPhone users will swap to Android. Since other countries use WhatsApp or whatever for texts, they don’t have this issue.

I think the origin was Swype and it first appeared on a windows phone.
