I think you’re a good guy for trying to help out. I also think the bus driver’s messaging is poor here.
If the company’s insurance doesn’t cover this and he has to pay, the better messaging would be “aw shucks my bus was damaged, and now I have to pay. Maybe some awesome LSU fans will help out.” Not a jump to “those damn LSU fans and their piss balloons and vandalism!”

They will. But incidents like this directly and adversely affect the driver's incentives and raises for a period of up to 3 years.
