perhaps the most famous state
Yup. If you asked a random sample of foreigners to name any US state, the most popular answer would probably be California, then Texas, then Florida. I'm not sure they would differentiate between NYC and NY state, but NY would also be up there.

None of that has anything to do with question presented by the OP. I'm just saying if you list all of the states that border WV, then Maryland would be forgotten more than the others.

I guess if you consider beaches, mountains and a great source of fish, crabs, and oysters forgettable, then okay. I would say Ohio. having been though it a couple of times, I saw no reason to want to go back, unless the river catches fire again. That would be worth seeing.

The correct answer is New Hampshire. Most people probably cannot even name a city there and very few could find it on a map.

The people saying South Dakota or Wyoming are crazy.
SD has the badlands, and the Black Hills which contains Mount Rushmore.
Those 2 areas are very famous and well visited.

Yea like the poster above me, Wyoming has Yellowstone and grand Teton national parks along with Jackson Hole.

IMO it’s one of the small northeastern states party bc I have zero desire to visit a few of them.

Delaware is an NPC state. It's not real. It's just East Maryland.

The Smithsonian channel did a special on all 50 states and they combined Maryland and Delaware into one program.

Kansas for me. Its just there. Mostly flat and the same. I am sure its a great place to live but as an outsider it just seems to be there and thats about it.

The most forgettable I ever lived in was Washington State. It is soooooooo bland they think coffee and clam chowder is a meal. Clam chowder. Not even remarkably good clam chowder. And not particularly good coffee. Both tolerable but nothing to write home about.

New Mexico. It's the desert you drive through to get to Arizona or Texas.

It is FANTASTIC if you have been practicing social distancing your entire life. I lived there 4 years and would go back again in a minute. My wife hated it. I could leave the house and drive 15 minutes in any direction and not see another person for weeks on end. I could also shoot a limit of dove every day of the season on public land and never see another soul and hunt ducks every day of the season and never see another person...I don't even know if they have game wardens LOL. It is fantastic....but it is very very very different than what most people expect of life....you basically need to be a hermit at heart to truly enjoy it.

Santa Fe makes up for the rest of the state.

That's the general consensus...but in my opinion Sante Fe and Alburquerque are the least of New Mexico...they are both the only areas, nearly, that is not unique. And there is too many people. The beauty of New Mexico is the small population outside of those 2 areas....for me at least. Is there anywhere else in the US where you can easily be 20 miles from pavement and not see or hear another human being for days and weeks on end if you are so bent? Alaska I guess. Montana and Wyoming but too much of all three of those are private property....not an issue in New Mexico.

It's probably Indiana for me

Even when I ask myself what states are forgettable, I think Missouri, Iowa, etc. and I forget about Indiana

If there is a state you forget about when thinking about forgettable states - that's the most forgettable state.

They have probably not seen much more than I-10 or I-40. I can easily understand why some folks would not like the land or enchantment....but for me being left the frick alone is one of life's greatest joys....

In terms of just driving thru, New Mexico is what I imagine driving on the surface of mars to be like.

I can see that. It is also one of the most unique areas in the US. Much of the state is more or less unchanged since Europeans first set foot on it. There is more public land than a person could see in several lifetimes. It ain't for everyone though...hell, a good many people IN New Mexico despise it. I loved it but I like being alone with my thoughts....

New Mexico is a hunting paradise. Almost the entire state is public land and there are so few people hunting anything other than big game is like it was 100 years ago in most of the country. Surprisingly good duck and goose hunting...in the desert. And no one involved in hunting them. It is a special place, but not for everyone.

Its also not all desert in the traditional sense. The middle of the state from north to south is basically the same as the rest of the mountain states minus the people.

Albuquerque pretty much sucked.

There has to be a down side even in paradise...
