Could be, but I imagine the number of women trying to have kids for the first time in their mid 30s and feeling like they're on borrowed time is pushing a lot of it.

A lot of our parents had kids into their 30s, but at least among my peers they were on second, third, fourth kids by then and I doubt there was as much desperation. Not to mention how accessible it was or how socially acceptable it was to get fertility help then vs. now.

And there it is….the “no one will take care of you when you get older” reason to have kids

It always makes it’s appearance

Having kids isn’t a guarantee they will care for you when you get old. Go visit a few nursing homes and ask how often the residents there get visits from family.

To recap, poor people is what we hate. If they could just stop being poor, we'd get along fine.

It may not be a guarantee, but I like the odds a heck of a lot better than if you don’t have any kids!

Yep. DINKs here and plan on retiring next year when I turn 50. Just established a Trust and wife and I put our brothers and sisters as the beneficiaries, so our nieces and nephews will be well taken care of. We always give them money for everything they do now with all their activities. I'm not going to sit here and say I don't think about what it would've been like to have kids but I'm happy with the amount of traveling we've done already and the early retirement coming.

People simply don’t want to give up their 4 times a year vacations and new cars to have children. And that’s ok, but why act like you couldn’t cut back and afford it?

No one owes you that explanation. No one owes you their answer to that question. Some people do not like kids. I’m one of them. My life is fulfilling without them. By all means, have kids. We need kids. But for me personally, not having kids was the single best decision I’ve ever made. For my sake and for any kids’ sake that I may have had.

And yes. Kids are expensive. Like you said, they get older. They eat more. People aren’t kicking their kids out when they’re 12.

Sheesh.

why have kids you're going to give someone else to raise? that's what a mom is for, to mother. nobody can mother your kid but their mother. you shouldn't have kids if you're just gonna stick 'em in day care.

If you want kids just so you will have someone at your deathbed, you probably won’t.

This is ridiculous. You do realize you can still be a good, involved parent even if you use the services of a daycare, right?

Indeed. Like they always have. It's a natural drive.

I just assume most of these kids aren't parent worthy anymore. They may be doing us all favors by opting out of reproducing

There’s 168 hours in a week. Daycare is roughly 40 hours. Who do you think is taking care of them the rest of the time? Idiot

To be fair we really haven't been at the replacement rate since 1971

People overstate what this truly costs. Until they are much older kids eat very little, clothing them can easily be made very cheap.

We spend over $20k per year in childcare costs for our two kids who aren’t school age yet. There certainly is a sweet spot after starting kindergarten where they really are pretty cheap, but there is nothing being overstated when childcare costs are involved for dual income households.

Because nobody would have kids if they had to depend on just one income for 5-6 years. Then you would be complaining about how all these deadbeat people are just staying home and not working....you can't have it both ways. Guess what there are a lot of women out there who want to have kids and a career, it's not 1955 anymore where mom stays home and patiently waits all day for dad to come home. My wife is a clinical pharmacist and works her butt off and is still a great mom and if I ever told her she just needs to stay home and be a baby machine she'd probably punch me in the face.

Since we both work, that means our kids have had to go to daycare for a bit. They get to play with other kids, learn to listen to adults other than mom and dad, and have access to fun activities.

That’s because no one will. These DINKs just better make sure they put a lot of their disposable income in retirement to ensure that they end up in a nicer facility.

It’s still a retarded reason to have kids.
