Name an impact DT on 2019 roster? None

Rashard Lawrence, Breiden Fehoko, Siaki Ika, and Tyler Shelvin

All of those guys are better than our current DTs. You won’t get very far acting like the 2019 roster sucked. It was stacked with talent, even on defense.

2019 defensive line was very average.

I do think it illustrates an interesting point about coaching when you compare how those guys fared in the NFL draft compared to the 2023 DTs:

2019
Lawrence: 4th round 2020
Fehoko: UDFA 2020
Shelvin: 4th round 2021
Ika: 3rd round 2023

2023
Smith: 2nd round 2024
Jefferson: 4th round 2024
Wingo: 6th round 2024
Guillory: TBD

Ika’s NFL future remains to be seen. Shelvin, Fehoko, and Lawrence have been practice squad guys (although Lawrence had earned a starting spot before getting hurt in his 2nd year).

I suspect that the combination of Smith, Wingo, Jefferson, and Guillory will see more NFL starts than the 2019 group. Obviously there’s no way to know for sure right now though.

My point? Well.. I’m certainly not arguing that the 2023 DL was better. They weren’t. That’s my point. I think there’s a chance the 2024 group looks a lot better than the 2023 group based on coaching alone. My biggest concern is the numbers, and the potential for an injury to wreck our DL.
