Don't get him something your sister (or wife's sister) told you not to.

ETA: Get him the watch for college graduation or his 21st birthday or something. He really won't have much use for a "nice watch" the next few years.

Sure get him the watch and a handwritten card saying how proud you are of him to overcome such tragedy and to accomplish all he has up to this point

That would mean a lot to me.

I gave my nieces and nephews a grand and told them to forget it exists. Some did and some didn't.

3 things about nice watches for kids.

1. They are kids and don’t know about value and will treat it as such
2. People who recognize those watches may be the kind your nephews don’t want to attract (either pretentious assholes or theives)
3. They won’t use it

I think it's weird that a woman would say don't. Absolutely get him the watch. It will mean something. Don't give some electronic item that will obsolete in 5 years.

Is there anything of his dads that you could repair, rebuild, fix it up nice etc that you could redo for him? Anything from the dad you could frame to hang on a wall? A favorite pic of him and his dad you could enlarge.

Take him to Yellowstone or on a guys vacation if he's outdoorsy. Otherwise, I like the buying him a suit idea. I could have used a couple in college.

Can I be your nephew?

If you spend $3-4000 on high school, you're setting an awfully high bar for college graduation. I agree with the watch- it's what a lot of seniors are getting instead of Senior Rings, but I would lower the bar a little.

Maybe I'm just an OT Poor, though.

Also as far as watches go, I don't get them. My phone shows me the time.

It's like jewelry. A woman doesn't care if you wear a watch or not. The only person that cares about a watch is the one wearing it. I haven't worn one since I was a teenager. No point in it.

I’d get him a suit if it were me. There will be events in his life here on out where he will be expected to be in suit and tie.

I assumed he was surreptitiously asking for advice on appropriate quantities of hookers and blow. Half ounce of coke is easy, but as to whether a $1500 hooker or 3 $500 hookers ... I'd have to know the kid.

I was going to say something like this for my serious answer: something like a non-penalty or add-on CD that he gets to cashout upon graduation.

I think there are plenty of reasons to consider non-watch options.

That said, there were plenty of swiss watches floating around my fraternity in college and those who didn't have one wanted one. It's been a while so maybe nobody cares anymore, but depending on him/his friends, there will be plenty of uses for it in college.

I had several close friends who had a daily driver Rolex or Omega in college.
