U.S. Hiring Slows to 175,000 Jobs in April LINK

Seasonally adjusted 175k+ for April. UE ticks up to 3.9%.

Mind you, "seasonally adjusted" is pure fricking statistical voodoo.

Anecdotal, but my employer just offered an early retirement package to everyone age 60+. I'm 68 and was planning to retire end of year, anyway, so the package is a nice reason to leave now.

However, when this was offered in the past, essentially, that means they plan a layoff, and need to analyze who is leaving, how to plug holes and then where they can effectively cut out bodies and maintain operations. Then they have to report their plan to the labor department and many of those who turned it down will be let go, anyway.

Job numbers down.

Gasoline prices up.

What a combination.

Honestly all of these cherry picking numbers mean nothing to me. I see with my own eyes and wallet on the daily how fricked we are economically. I think most Americans are the same way. We live the struggle, so the statistics are nothing more than noise.

Agreed.

But when even the "official" numbers aren't great, that indicates that the reality is MUCH worse.

Janet yellen just said last week inflation is decreasing

I'll translate: inflation is only 4% instead of 9%, so they are doing a bang up job

No chance of one until after next quarter GDP is released. I'd expect 1st Quarter to be revised downward ti take the sting out of 2Q number. Of course, if inflation is the same (or higher), you can shut that down for the year.

I work for a Fortune 100 company and we laid off 250 “low performing” employees last week. We usually don’t “layoff” employees, we usually do hiring freezes and shuffle people around so it was a big surprise to everyone.

A slower rate of increase is a decrease?

That's like saying pressing the accelerator petal only halfway down is the same as hitting the brakes.

Those numbers are just voodoo any way.

If you counted just full employment that number would be way higher.

Now a days they would throw somebody in there making 5 hours a week as employed in a part time job.

They also throw out other stats like those that are not looking at all for work and unemployed for more than so many months.

It is always good when you can cook the books.
