The first 30 minutes of Superbad is terrific. The last hour or so is pretty good but not great. Overall, it's good but not at the level of Not Another Teen Movie.

It’s pretty damned good.”-
Hill slays, and Cera singing “These Eyes” is hilarious. Of course, there’s Hader and Rogen.
And young Emma Stone hotness.

Not Another Teen Movie I’d say is a great parody, but it doesn’t stand on its own. You have to understand the references, almost all of which are very funny.

I strongly disagree with this. Sure there are some jokes where it may definitely HELP to know the origin on what it's parodying, but even not knowing that it doesn't negate the funniness. Take the contest for example. It's not a prerequisite to have seen She's All That to find that entire "I'm talkin about a reeeeeeal shite bomb" "she's got a ponytail....and glasses!" sequnce funny. You don't have to have seen Sixteen Candles to find Jake Wyler funny. You don't have to have seen Bring it On to find teh cheerleader dance routine ripoff of east compton cloveers funny. And we coudl go on and on.

I think abut the only gag that kinda DOES need to have some prior knowledge would be the molly ringwold cameo at the end, because if you had zero knowledge of the references ahead of time you'd just be like "who is that lady". But many of the hundreds of gags in movie are funny as hell enough in their own right.

As much as I love NATM, it certainly won’t age as well as Superbad because NATM is heavily reliant that you have seen the movies it is parodying, and 20 years from now, very few will have seen them.

Superbad not only stands on its own, but is from the start shot as a period piece. Like Dazed and Confused, it’s going to hold up due to this. It brings you into the times very well and isn’t really dependent on any pop culture references outside of a side joke about Aladdin and the Coen Brothers.

agree with all of this. i absolutely love dazed and confused. i don't really relate at all to the specific events unfolding, but you relate to the characters and the overarching concepts.

superbad is the same in that way, IMO.

NATM is probably the movie i would put right up there with superbad for myself and my friends, but as everyone has said, if you haven't seen 20 teen comedies from the 80s, 90s, early 2000s, then it wont be a hit. you don't need to have seen the specific ones refrerenced IMO, but you have to see a collection to fully get it.
