This will happen with any sport.
The logic is it is better to err on the side of player safety. The league will compensate the ticket holder and fine the player if they are found to be inappropriate later. Security works for the team/arena, it's not their job to be the judge if a player was at fault, the player is part of the event.
Kicking a player out is the refs job, not the security guard.
The security guard could move the fan to a different seat, but I doubt they were many open ones for a playoff game.

Once there’s an assault against a fan it becomes a security issue not a ref issue.
