What’s the championship count

CJJ - 1
CTV - 0

Had you asked that same question circa 1990, there were likely several active coaches with more championships than Skip. But who was the better coach?

CJJ coached 2 years at Nevada and 6 in AZ and is into year 3 here. CTV is in what year 6 or 7 at UTenn? So CJJ has a head start over CTV. Skip won his first title in year-8.

Where I think CTV has some growing to do is to close the deal. His '22 team was great but never left Knoxville. When CJJ had comparable talent he won it all.

Think people forget So(RS)/Jr's and above weren't fully recruited by Jay unless they were transfers. 2 full recruiting classes vs someone who has had 7 full classes.

I think Jay is a better fit for a program like lsu. I think they are both fantastic at getting talent

I think the plus side for Vitello would be his in game management is superior

2 out 3 years he has been here The Box will be Dark come postseason. No reason we shouldn’t be in position to host every year.

Vitello is still an elite coach and anyone who says otherwise is just fooling themselves.

I guess it just depends on what the meaning of elite coach means. Without a definition any person who has not ever won a national championship, who has not ever come close to winning a national championship, could be called elite.

I think his resume would say yes to all categories except 1. Tenn clearly most consistent winner in country last 3 years.
