There’s a phrase for it called Memory Hole. Where the collective wants you to forget certain events happening. Usually the course of action is for the news cycle to immediately cover something else just as sensational and stop talking about said event, hoping that the masses attention span will forget about the incident they don’t want you to remember. From anything like the Vegas shooting to even smaller scale stuff like Jim Boheim’s basement used for molesting kids. Way more effective pre-internet of course.

For example you had a whole generation of people not sure if they saw a batshit insane Star Wars Christmas special or it was just a fever dream because it was memory holed from existence by Lucas.
