You earned your money didn't you???,.. damn what seems tacky or trashy to other people.., of course I'm asking what the price is... but then again I check receipts at the register before I walk off ... bad habit I inherited from my Mama and Grandma

How does market price of something on a menu at a restaurant work?
Please tell me you are NOT from Louisiana and I hope you admit to a shell food allergy.
Think CRAWFISH!

In my experience if it’s a good restaurant and it’s a fair market price, the waiter will tell you. If it’s absurdly high they usually don’t which is ridiculous, as a former waiter one of your initial introductions should be to talk about the market priced items so people don’t have to ask.
I have a similar story, my Brother in law and wife were eating at a decent place with $40-60 meals about 6 months ago and they had a tomahawk steak on special. He didn’t ask, assuming it would be $70-90. Ended up being $130. Which in hindsight probably isn’t terrible for that size, but if you are running a special with a market priced item 2x the cost of anything else on the menu you really suck as a server not mentioning the cost.

If it's the meal that excites me the most on the menu, I usually don't ask.
If it's just competition for what I might order, I'll ask. Usually in the "What is the catch of the day? And how is it prepared? And how much?" sort of way.
(Caveat: not poor)

Just wanted to add that if you are worried about whether the help thinks you are tacky or not screams you are poor.

I spent an average of 10 dollars a day on food & drink last month. Being poor is tough.

I figured you’d be rich now that there’s a billboard lawyer in the governors mansion
Y’all should unionize and make Morris pay y’all better
