I'm sure people had this same view in the 70s. Then Ronald Reagan was elected in a monumental landslide.

the difference in the 70s was that the Left, for the most part, still believed in America and American values. half the country now literally thinks America is an evil country.

I don't know about that. Populism was pretty entrenched in the left by then. The nuclear family was being intentionally disintegrated, starting in the 60s with welfare and continuing into the 70s with 2nd wave feminism, distrusting and protesting the "Establishment" (which is a term that eventually fell out of favor among the populists on the left and now has been picked up by populists on the right) was probably most popular with the left around that time period, etc.

A good sight more than half. Remember that thread not too long ago here that posed the hypothetical about a foreign power attacking America on our own soil? Probably a slight majority of posters on that thread said they wouldn't fight to defend it. On our own soil.

Again, and again, and again, and again, that's the problem with populism. It creates absurd (using the word's literal meaning), unreasonable degrees of discontent.

Neither the majority of the people on the left OR the right love America anymore. They love conspiracy theories and victimhood instead.
