They did not secede!!!

But why does it matter? Either way the action stands for freedom of self-determination and self-government. The people of St. George decided to create their own political entity to govern their fates. If they were part of the city of Baton Rouge and were disgusted with the city's administration, why shouldn't the majority of a defined area be able to do the same and form their own corporate entity.

New Orleanians disgusted with Mayor Shrek and the City Council should be able to secede if the government persists in ignoring their idea of good government and the majority of a defined area (think Uptown/Lakeview) decide to form their own government or join with an already better run government (Jeff Parish--yes Uptown originally was part of Jefferson Parish before Orleans annexed it).

Secession is a charged word, but the governing concept is the same.
