For things just outside of Cape Town (and perfectly safe):

Simon’s Town and Boulder Beach for the penguins. There’s a good pub there, The Two and Sixpence. Simon’s Town Country Club has good lunch and dinner specials and a bar, you don’t have to be a member. The South African naval museum is there as well. The harbor are is nice to walk around and take your picture with the statue of Just Nuisance.

Mariner’s Wharf in Hout Bay is a good restaurant and market area, the beach at Hout Bay is nice as well.

One of the best steaks I’ve ever had was at Nelson’s Eye steakhouse in Cape Town. They also have crazy game on the menu like Springbok and ostrich.

I also suggest driving out to the national park where the Cape of Good Hope is. It’s a beautiful park with wildlife and great views. It’s kind of in the middle of nowhere but an easy drive/ride from Cape Town.

Definitely try and do some wine country stuff. I didn’t get the chance but I have been hooked on SA wine ever since I went down there.

Yes, was just going to suggest all of the above. I'll add Stellenbosh and Franschhoek are the two areas for wineries. SA is known for a great Pinotage. Most of the wineries are huge properties and like small towns with bakeries, fine dining , casual dining, ponds , tasting rooms, shops and hotels. The beach town of Camp's Bay has some great beach side dining and fabulous sunset views.
