With the large numbers a cheap labor coming across the border, right now and the near may be a great time to own a construction business. Just have to be good with numbers and people.

Might not be a great time to be a tradesman/laborer though.....

its not just they dont want to bother with small jobs, they dont even want to bother with medium sized renos.

they dont seem interested until the scope of the work reaches 6 figures

i had a $15k house edition to enclose a porch, to be living space, and no one even wanted to agreed to come look at it much less show up to bid the job. all i got was leave me your number and we will call you back, which they never do

Insane! One day they won’t have work. People will get tired of it.

Just get yourself a reliable Handy-man to do the job. Something like that is an easy job for anyone with any carpenter skills to undertake.

Well, based on a few tradesmen I knew growing up. Those guys would frequently work on and off based on cash in pocket and habits that would prevent work at places that drug tested

Long term strategic planning was not really in the cards.

And willing to develop a reputation for shoddy construction. Cheap, unskilled labor of the past is actually the root of the problem today.

Wrong, today has never been better with the work available if you take pride in what you do and can produce quality results. People are desperate just for someone with good troubleshooting skills that can show them what is wrong before they hire a licensed technician. They also want someone they can trust to double-check the work, I see lots of work that is technically done right to code but will cause issues later if not re-addressed.

In case yall haven't seen it, South Park did an incredible episode on handymen and how basically they're overbooked constantly to the highest bidders since no one knows how to do work themselves:

Over the years I’ve built and flipped houses. I know good subs in BTR. It is getting harder with the trade industry. I often tell folks, if you need a painter, go to a paint store, get 3 or 4 names. You can find what you need. I grew up with a number of folks that do Electrical, Plumbing, etc. I ask them for references.

Here's another suggestion.....if you know a local fence company, try to get in touch with the guy running the crew or the general laborers. Lots of times you can get the employees of the company to do a job like that on the weekend for cash money. It's generally cheaper than going through the fence contractor and they know what they are doing.

All depends on location though. If you are in a high demand area, maybe this suggestion is pie in the sky.

They don't know and they don't want to take a risk on trying a fix themselves. Can't tell you how many times I've been called out by a client because something wasn't working and it was something like dead batteries, loose power cord, tripped GFCI or breaker. I'm fine with such situations, I make a good chunk of cash for a few minutes of work.

Same here for Plumber. Called guy I used several times for 3-4 hour job that I’m not comfortable doing and just total ghosting.

And with the money they charge an hour, that's insane he won't show up for a quick in and out job.

Plumbers in the N.O. area are $100 an hr. and up.

needed a repair for my brick mailbox. Called about 8 different brick masonry contractors and couldn't get a single one to come look at it. Ended up fixing it myself with the help of youtube.
these guys are the absolute worst. My exact experience

In the last month I have turned two simple plumbing jobs into oh shite moments. Thankfully got a plumber here within hours both times. On a Friday no less

The second time he advised me to quit trying to do shite on Fridays

Go the handyman route. S small repair job isn’t big enough for a fence guy to do.

Metry I presume ? I'm currently redoing my 20-yr old fence; removing concrete and 4x4 posts. I'm in Lafayette otherwise I'd offer to come help and do the hard physical work.

Pillage in their defense, they probably don't have time to come fix a few bricks on a mailbox
