Bogue Chitto recently came up on a trail building podcast I listen to. There are definitely some cool trails there. Ruston, LA just got some new MTB trails as well that are pretty awesome for those of you further north in the state.

It's a great sport. For those of you looking to get into it: it's not cheap. I highly recommend going to an actual bike shop and getting an entry-level hardtail (do NOT buy a cheap full suspension, as it's going to be heavy, unreliable and have ineffective suspension).

Trek Marlin and Specialized Rockhopper are two good entry-level bikes. If you can get a dropper post, upgrade to one as soon as you can. It will greatly increase you enjoyment on the bike.

Good to know about Ruston trails. I’ve ridden Caney Lake trails a few times and I’ve never seen more ticks and snakes than on that trail. Hitting brush and vines the entire time. Very tight. Not well maintained as of a couple of years ago. Hope it’s changed.

I’d recommend buying a used mainline bike to start and see if you like it.
