I dont think the falcons defense should be ‘see other teams have made crappy qb selections early in the draft’

This. The reaction to the pick has nothing at all to do with Penix as a player.
It’s that they picked him immediately after paying Cojsins huge money and still have glaring needs, particularly on defense.
They just signed a QB and could have had their pick of any of the top defensive players in the draft. Instead went with another QB.

$180 million for Cousins was not great IMO, but then to burn the 8th pick on a QB, the fourth QB taken?
I thought Falcons would take Dallas Turner. I would have taken Bowers.
