Early 2000s tHC was the 3rd most popular channel among men (after the two ESPNs)
But a lot of the men were older. Sponsors want younger viewers, who are supposedly more willing to switch products. And women are believed to do most of the shopping
Ergo, the 16-34 female demo is the most sought after. And the classic HC did not deliver that.
