I don't mind paying someone who has a full powered setup to get my knives back in shape when the ceramic sticks or sharpening steel isn't effective anymore. Which is a pretty dang long time for me.

That's what they make different grits of sandpaper for. Get the nicks and dings out of the blade with the sandpaper and then go to the stone.

I have 3 stones from 600 to 3000 and have a barber's strop with the Irish Linen on one side and the smooth leather on the other.

When I'm done hitting the leather side, I can easily shave with the blade.
