Old TV report featuring prominent LSU alum John Butler that popped up on my feed. The gap was already wide when this story was done in the 1990's. Austin did it's best to close the gap back with its recent homeless insanity, but BR seems to have countered with crime in general.

The main difference, as John points out, came down to the university being treated as a center of wealth creation and the university, state, and local governments all pulling in the same direction. A local D politician of that era once told me "TH, in Austin, we have the kind of Democrats who think it's OK to make a profit" Discuss.....

Is there seriously a debate? I graduated from LSU, but BR is a shithole! Austin every day of the week!

Serious question: is Austin nice if you’re middle class with a family?

Seems like when I hear about cities being nice places to live, that typically means for rich people to enjoy.

Absolutely neither, ever. No chance. WTF would you want with either???

BR has little going for it unless you grew up there, I visit a few times per year and have never had an experience that I consider memorable other than some good meat markets. I don't hate the place but never seriosly considered it when we moved out of NOLA. I can't imagine many people do that aren't in state politics, LSU, or grew up local.

Austin is liberal paradise that is 180deg of most things I love about Texas. It's like a little San Francisco or LA. WTF would be attractive about that? Most people are fleeing cities like this. It's only a matter of time until Austin jumps the shark, too. This is a city full of bureacrats, virtue signaling fart sniffers, and everything that is not cool in between.

I mean I could name you seriously 200 cities I would move to before Austin or Baton Rouge. Hard pass on either. I love Louisiana and Texas but not attracted to those two cities.

Only thing BR beats Austin at is in LA you can be fairly certain the “woman” you’re talking to is actually female.

I moved from BR to Austin in the early 90s. Man, Austin was the shite back then. It's still head and shoulders better than BR. It's an actual thriving city. Yes, there are liberals and they screw up anything they get their hands on. But Austin is also lost in a sea of red for the rest of the state. The liberal screw ups (defund the popo, ok for homeless to camp on the sidewalks, sheesh) get overturned pretty quickly. The state capital has to threaten to take over occasionally.

On the other side of the liberals are lots of companies hiring almost all of the time. There are lakes and hills. I expected tumbleweeds before moving. Lots of hot chicks, the dudechicks aren't hard to spot. Traffic sucks but that's everywhere. Amazing food scene in all price ranges.

As to the middle class being able to enjoy/appreciate Austin...absolutely. Parks, spring fed city pools, lots of reasonably priced places to eat. Housing is steep but that's one of the growing pains of being a fastest growing city for years. In 30 years I've never been harassed by homeless or experienced crime. It happens but it's not rampant just like going to the French Quarter, NYC or wherever isn't dangerous for the vast majority of people. Just don't be a dumbass.

Austin is still hands down better, especially for white collar workers.

Pre 2014 Austin was the premier city if you were a millenial graduating college. There's was tons of jobs, it was relatively cheap, and had a better scene than Houston or Dallas. It was still pretty decent before COVID but all those millenials who kept moving there and the California transplants drove the prices through the roof.

I wouldn't live in Austin again. From 97 - 01 it was beyond awesome.

But Baton Rouge isn't even in the same hemisphere.

I lived in BR for 5 years, now I live north of Austin.

It would take more than a million dollar a year salary for me to move my family to BR.

There is no bigger shite hole that I have ever spent extensive time in than Baton Rouge.

Austin singlehandedly beats BR in almost every category except cost of living. The property taxes in TX cities are already high, Austin’s tax rate is on a whole different level.

Austin is one of the best places in the country to live, Baton Rouge is one of the worst. I’ve lived in both, it ain’t even close.

Baton Rouge could be a lot better but it's also the capital of a poor, mostly rural state. Austin is the capital of a state with a GDP and population higher than a lot of countries. There's really no comparison in terms of potential.

The few hoods in Austin have nothing on the shithole that is north BR. Not to mention, Austin has less murders (60-70/year) than BR (100+) despite having almost five times the population (970k vs 220k).

This thread makes me sad. I loved BR (late 80's / early 90's) and I always wanted to move back to BR. I understand the post-Katrina 'changes' happened, and Austin has a much nicer overall metro area. But damn, I have so many great memories of my time in BR. This hurts to read.

Both are shite holes, just for slightly different reasons.
