This is saying if a President is impeached and removed from office the next step is for the DOJ to bring criminal charges. If the Senate acquits the President he is cleared of wrongdoing by Congress and the Executive Branch can't prosecute.

Congress can't bring criminal charges, only the Executive Branch can. But Congress can say the President is not guilty of any crime.

The short-sighted Democrats shot their wad bringing "Insurrection" into Trump's second impeachment. Trump was acquitted by Congress of any charges related to insurrection.

You chose to ignore the "but the party convicted" part.

Very good post. Basically a president must be impeached first which then opens him up to criminal prosecution. Trump was acquitted for insurrection by Congress therefore closing the door on prosecution for this. This is where immunity comes in, if the Supreme says no immunity, the impeachment acquittal means nothing. So in affect the impeachment process is neutered.
