Article indicates there is a slight increase in birth rates in states where it was “banned”.

That's not what it says at all. It says 2.3% higher than states without abortion restrictions. It could still be declining.

Those states could also have higher birth rates anyway, irrespective of abortion laws. It's logical to assume that states that would lean conservative and restrict abortion have more babies and fewer abortions to begin with.

However, an analysis from November suggests that states with abortion bans had an average fertility rate that was 2.3% higher than states where abortion was not restricted in the first half of 2023, leading to about 32,000 more births than expected.

I don't think abortion laws have anything to do with this.

Its a demographic thing, if you states has more hispanics and blacks, you will have a higher fertility rate

the whitest states (the NE), have historically had the lowest fertility rates

North Dakota and Utah are the exceptions to this rule

A lot of people under 30 aren't having near as much actual sex as people under 30 did back in the 60s-90s. Most HONEST people in this demo will admit this to you. Couple this with way more women working FT now and not wanting (or having the energy left over) to deal with a family and there you go.

You can thank the proliferation of phones, social media, video games, etc...WSJ had an article a while back detailing how millennials are having less sex than any other generation ever.

And will continue to if the government keeps hammering the middle class and wasting taxpayer money.

Meanwhile, births continued to shift to older mothers. Older age groups saw smaller decreases in birth rates, and the birth rate was highest among women ages 30 to 34 – with about 95 births for every 1,000 women in this group in 2023. Women 40 and older were the only group to see an increase in birth rate, although – at less than 13 births for every 1,000 women – it remained lower than any other age group.

This is at least part of it but definitely doesn't make up for what seems to be a cultural reduction in people wanting kids.

Have 3 close friends all in late 30's about to have their 1st child. Anecdotally I think alot of young people are waiting these days, but naturally even that would lead to less kids b/c there isnt much time to pop out multiple kids.

from what i've seen black birth rates are only slightly above white ones and they are dropping faster and the native born Latino birth rates are similar, they are propped up by immigrant ones

The easy one is the correlation with women joining the workforce and the rapid fertility rate dropping in the 1960s. It correlate perfectly.

But women in the workforce has been decreasing since the 2000s, but fertility rates have continues to decrease, despite a small uptick in the 1990s.

My opinion is that the cultural aspect began when women entered the workforce, which became engrained, and now we are simply seeing the cycle of up and down with economic cycles.

Thank goodness we have a well defined and controlled immigration process to insure the best and brightest in the world are coming in to make up for this lower birth rate.

Even if we did, foreign immigration, this melting pot idea (the term goes back to a communist) would by its nature undermine and eventually destroy us as people.

Women don’t want to have children in the prime birthing years anymore.

That is most likely the #1 factor here.

This is 90% of it. Women now get overwhelming preferential treatment in corporate America. They enjoy the perks and travel and do not want to get bogged down with kids too early. Problem is they delay too long and their clock runs out.

Also they don't want to get married and have children with men they think are less successful than them.

The only way to increase the birth rate is to give men more power in the workplace. Then women might return to a traditional role and start having kids again.

We all know that wont happen though. Elon is right we are going extinct.

We know exactly what the issue is. It’s one of the most scientifically verified facts today: microplastics building up in our systems from generation to generation.

Measure your taints people. Anyone with less than 2 inches on the poop balls bridge is going to struggle.

People that need to be having kids aren’t having any or very few and those that don’t need to have kids are having the most. We’re screwed. Make more babies.

Income has little to do with it. If anything, the poorer you are, the more kids you tend to have.

This is ALL about the sexual revolution and women either choosing career over marriage, or waiting too long to get married. The average age for female marriage is now 29. That’s also about when fertility in females begins to nosedive. Most women that choose to wait don’t realize that until it’s past too late. Thus the demand for IVF and egg freezing. The Biological Clock doesn’t care about her feelings. It is what it is.
